The Bard of Avon.
William Shakespeare was born and died at Stratford-upon-Avon in the United Kingdom. He earned the title "the Bard of Avon." Most of his life he was involved in theater in London, England.
Stratford, Ontario is famous for its many theaters. Many of Shakespeare's plays have been performed here. The river going through it has been aptly named the "Avon." The Avon flows into the "Thames" and was, at one time, known as the "Little Thames." In 1834, Thomas Mercer Jones, a Canada Company Director, gave the name of Stratford to our community and renamed the Little Thames River. Thus, the river and the village were named after the birthplace of William Shakespeare.
Shakespeare, known as "the Bard of Avon" brought respect to his title. Originally the term "bard" was meant in a derogatory sense to refer to travelling minstrels who recited poems while playing instruments. The term evolved to mean any poet and especially a poet who earned his living with poetry. The most well known and most successful bard would have to be William Shakespeare.
Throughout the ages, poetry was used as a method of memorization. Important facts, lines in a play, or anything we wanted to remember would be put to verse to make the task easier. In modern times we rely less on memory while notebooks and computers retain the things we need to know. Poetry has lost a lot of its appeal, but is enjoying a bit of a resurgence as an art form. So the question arises, "is Stratford ready for a new bard?"
George McNeish has written poetry for most of his life. Being informed that poetry was a tough sell, he has not yet published any. Now, after publishing a novel and a short story that was turned into a very successful play, he is willing to test the waters in the poetry field. Being Canadian, Stratford seems like the natural place to do this. The "Bard of Avon" has made Stratford famous. Now we will see if Stratford can help to promote its latest bard.
